First Things, First! When Starting an Online Business

I would have to say by biggest downfall starting my business was all the running around I did to complete my first sale.  If I had any advice to give someone it would be make sure to have all the "staples" first.  There are basic supplies you need to have and if you give yourself time you can save some money and stress.

First, any online business needs shipping supplies.  Scales, postage labels, packaging, bubble wrap (if needed), etc.  Research how much your items will cost to ship between different suppliers.  It may surprise you that depending on the weight and size what your best option is.  The U.S. Post Office did raise their rates, but now even first class packages are trackable!  So you don't have to ship "Priority Mail" to make sure your items are delivered.  I definitely saved money by buying my scale and shipping supplies online.  Doing some research can save you money and a lot of running around.  Just make sure to give yourself time so you can benefit from free shipping, etc.

Business cards and marketing supplies are a necessity!  Don't be fooled into thinking you won't need those items with an online store.  I see people all of the time that ask about my daughters clothing or hair bows.  You can save money by buying online, but shipping times are excessive with some lower cost companies.  So you need to allow time to benefit from the extra savings.

People expect when they buy a homemade item that they are receiving a cute package when they open it.  This is part of the reason they are coming to you instead of a box store.  They want customer service, a uniquely special item and "feel the love" when they open that package.  Here is where I have to say I have saved money shopping locally.  Don't be fooled into thinking everything is cheaper online.

I know this sounds like basic stuff and it is.  First starting out I was scared that no one would buy my items, so why pour a lot of money into these things when I haven't made my first sale.  That was the wrong way of thinking.  I could have saved a lot of time, money and stress, by being prepared for that first sale.  I laugh now thinking how far I have come...and am still making strides every day!
