My youngest daughter keeps asking for a magic wand for Christmas next year from Santa. I have reassured her if there was such as thing...I would already have one. As a mom of two school age children, I had the misconception that once they were in school I would have tons of free time. What I didn't think of was that everything I did before I still had to do, but complete it all before they got home from school so I could spend the rest of the day running them everywhere, making dinner, doing homework, getting them in the shower and ready for bed.
I recently read something that I think all moms need to keep in mind. We are not going to win awards for our hard work, but in the end the things we have taught our children will continue for generations. Sometimes it is a very hard balance to keep family and careers in check. My misconception was that running my own business would make things easier. Honestly, I think it is easier to work for someone else. There is little liability on yourself, they make all of the hard decisions, and once you leave work you can go home and put most of the day behind you. Not that I didn't think starting an online business would be easy, but I didn't expect it to be this hard. I figured I loaded my stuff on the site, people would search, I would answer questions, they would purchase and I would ship it out. Okay, that does make it sound too easy.
First things to keep in mind. Not only does it take the time to make the items, there is more time spent online with key words, listing description, uploading pictures, etc. The first few weeks I spent in panic. No matter what I thought I was going to sell, I sold the only thing I didn't have in stock that someone needed. I went through ordering supplies online that I couldn't find in stores, stores were out of stock on items that I needed, and best of all it was holiday shipping craziness that delayed most of my orders. I would recommend not starting a business right before the holidays!
Don't get me wrong, I am glad I started this adventure. It just has a long road ahead. Tomorrow, I promise I will make you laugh...until then if you find a magic wand, please send it my way :)
